No kidding, let’s make a backup!

No kidding, let’s make a backup!

On the eve of the World Backup Day, we’ve decided to remind our audience why it is necessary to do backups, the data value and the way how to secure your data.

Why the World Backup Day is celebrated before the April Fools' Day

In the year 2011, a small group from the popular social news-aggregation website Reddit proposed to celebrate a World Backup Day annually on March 31st.

This day people (as consider its idea-mongers) present each other flash cards, external hard disks and certificates for the system backup to remote storage of the European hosting provider. Well, it must be even cooler than St. Valentine’s Day – because it is possible to live without falling in love (although it’ll be so sad…), but your data drastically can’t “live” without backups.

This date was chosen in a non-random manner. It may seem like a joke, but it is not funny: on April, 1st is celebrated the All Fools’ Day, history is replete with examples where hackers made their ransomware attacks, or backdoors exploits, that were used to steal private or confidential information. So, if you don’t want to be a fool this day, just make a backup on March, 31, this is the sense of the World Backup Day.

Not only backdoors, various malware, and ransomware can damage your data. Internal system errors or provided by a voltage swing soft fault, a fire at the server-hosted building, a riot of nature damaging commutation channels between point of sale and DPC when a mass of transactions is going on, at least, a human factor, – all of these reasons can cause data-downside. But the only lifebelt that can save your information is made automatically by schedule and saved in remote reliable storage up-to-date backup version.

Backups: the most effective methods for various activities

What kind of backup is the best?

The World Backup Day statement says, that this special day has to remain people about true data values. Wedding videos and family pictures, rare painting albums and digitalized books, rare music records and book-keeping documents, doctoral thesis on bio cybernetics and CRM system, personal diaries and corporate finance data – all of us have own values and would suffer when we lose it. No matter what kind of information, an optimal backup scheme is 3-2-1. That means if you save files on your laptop hard disk, on Google Drive and on an external hard drive that you’ll hide into a bank lockbox (or into a deep dark grandma wardrobe in a small Thüringen town), you can be sure your data has high chance to stay secure.

Although, in case of large volumes of dynamically changing data, you need to use automated backup services. Household consumers can choose it from a wide list of online services, some of them allow you to set a backup frequency and a storage volume, but on the other hand, file volume or backup copies expiry date could be limited there.

However, those services do not meet corporate requirements to backup large mass of data, at least. In addition, providers of these services often do not define numbers of Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point Objective, and recovery rate clearly.

Cloud technologies, with their onrush, are the best solutions for the reliable and safe backup process. And when the cloud Iaas located in Germany your backup data  is secured by a wide range of specific security measures in certified on ISO27001 EU data centers with redundant infrastructure and strong communication lines.

Backup as a procedure has some types those we have already described in the SIM-Networks corporate blog earlier. The problem is to define what type absolutely suites your requirement. We advise you to rely on experts, who can consult you and answer all the questions, but much better if you entrust to their expertise to allow them to set your backup correctly in full concordance with your project needs. Be sure, your data is secure.

Our clients, that use SIM-Cloud IaaS , for example, can get an additional cloud backup service (SIM-Cloud BaaS), and can choose one of the backup storage localization options:

  • Baas Local: the backup storage is located in the same German data center where your infrastructure has been deployed; recovery rate is 300-600 Gb per hour;
  • Baas Remote; the backup storage is located in another data center remote from your infrastructure; recovery rate is 100-150 Gb per hour.

Some good advice regarding backup

SIM-Networks likes backup, and wish you all do the same – all your data needs is a backup. Many years of our expertise in IT let assert, that hosting users have to take care of backup.

In addition, we suggest you to read some advice from one of Runet experts Andrey Korkhonen considering backing up your data:

  1. Backup is not only cybersecurity measure but it’s the right way to save your money, nervous and time.
  2. You should make backup always.
  3. Backup needs to be automatically scheduled because human memory is not too reliable.
  4. Your backup needs to be always up-to-date! Moreover, set backup frequency accordingly to the frequency of your data changes.
  5. Backup is never too much.
  6. A few backup storages located in different places keep your mind calm.
  7. Backup completeness and recovery ability are the most important things to ensure your data safety. Check them always!

Although, if you have decided to entrust to professionals, be sure that paragraphs from 2 to 7 will be done in the best way. SIM-Networks Tech Support experts can consult and help your technical employees to set back up correctly – we used to do it for our customers (see more in our Case Studies soon!).
