On September 20, 2016 the conference “Around the Cloud” took place, were IT-pros, customers, integrators, companies-users of the cloud gathered to talk about clouds, in other words, those who somehow deal with cloud technologies. A separate conference stream was connected with industrial automatization where participated IT-pros from the industrial sector. They shared their experience of IT-solutions introduction, on standards used at the large commercial production (for example, steelmaking). Among the participants the representative of Nokia was observed with his report about Software Defined Network solution. The customers of the cloud solutions did not stay on the sidelines, most actively shared their experience of using clouds.

Miroslav Migovich, Manager for SIM-Networks Project Department told about what was interesting for the customers actively “going into the clouds”. Miroslav shared recommendations that may help not to disappoint and fully use all advantages of the cloud services. Let’s introduce briefly some report theses:

 

Be concerned about data security, transfer and store data codified. Your data is the most valuable you have. You should by yourself worry about their security. It seems to be banal but most customers do not do this, we give them tips, this aspect shall not be initially missed out.

 

Arrange entirely optimum data, drives and computers archiving algorithms. Correct data archiving shall be stipulated at any times. It is comfortable to archive in the cloud not only data, working places, but also whole virtual machines. At the same time you can use for the archiving both local storages locating in the same cloud, and remote areas making your infrastructure not just fail-safety but also disaster-proof with minimum expenses.

 

Free of charge migration. Very often the company needs to transfer data. It is more profitable to select providers offering free of charge data transfer. It’s not necessary to pay for each body movement, it’s enough to analyze the market and find optimum solutions exactly for you. Free data transfer can gain significant money by migration.

 

Some words about rates. Unfortunately, there are still providers roughly limiting traffic. The obvious advice: search for those providers offering unlimited traffic and the opportunity for choosing channels with required throughput capacity.

 

Throughput capacity of the internal network. Throughput capacity inside the cloud – this point is very important from the technological point of view. It’s a delicate moment; most suppliers of cloud services talk unwillingly speak to this point. They do not want to disclose the structure of their network. But if we look deep into the point, this depends of how high quality service would you buy from the provider. This depends a lot on speed inside cloud. How are nodes connected between themselves? With which speeds? By which protocols? Services of the most enterprises can  easily work with 1 Gbit but it should be taken into account that the most providers use 10G, and only the most advanced build their clouds on 40G, or InfiniBand 56G. It is recommended to search for such providers so that the advanced infrastructure in a cloud may be obtained without any expenses.

 

One more complicated moment – cores. We all know that leased virtual cores in the cloud can be of a great difference: there exist various generations of processors, different bus frequencies, various memory speeds. Don’t hesitate to ask providers questions which cores they offer to you; you must be acutely aware of what do you pay for.

 

Most large companies face the necessity to plan migration process from their existing infrastructure into cloud one.

 

Some words about migration process. If we rudely divide providers on those who offer their as is services — take everything available, use, and how – we don’t bother about that. But it is better to search for the provider being not just a seller, but will become a partner for you and a consultant you can rely on, knowing that he will not leave you face to face with the problem in the situation you need help.

IT-audience is extremely interested in cloud technologies. The stream “around the cloud” – full hall! During one of the reports the laptop of the speaker started independently connecting with the virtual machine :) — IT automatization, holy moly! :)

Customer’s representative, a large reseller (HHAC/HHAM) told a very informative case having told about his experience of transferring to the clouds. Notably that the removal was to European data centers notwithstanding that there are own DPCs in Ukraine. Interesting and necessary information was the information on how the company has adjusted reactive and proactive monitoring of its infrastructure as various types of monitoring have their own advantages and disadvantages. Forecast calculation of what a how works/ will work/, what is required in future allow making connection of two monitoring types. No less interesting was a description of the motivation case: company’s engineer-administrator monitoring the effectiveness of using cloud and other IT resources receives the interest from saved money if he calculates non-effective use of resources. Taking into account the extent of using cloud resources of by such large company, we may assume that it is a pretty good bonus we get. :)

There was an integrator shared his experience of fail-safety provision in DPCs and customers’ clouds. We all know that 90% of all mess-ups are a human factor, and now we are trying to protect ourselves from earthquakes and floods :) (though we need it). He told about that if the entire company’s IT-infrastructure is taken, the critical systems shall consist min. 25%, and if the customer says “it’s all critical by me” – as you may often hear such – so let him be prepared to pay for this 10 times more for fail-safety “of all”. If he is not ready, so let him try to separate out of his business processes something important. As a rule, it concerns money: no money – no life in the company. That’s why when all business-processes are considered from this point of view – everything fall into place and the customer does not rush to protect “everything at all”. Certainly, whether we like or not, however, we sill be able to live with such we risks, we live in the sterile world and for this case a risk plan shall be available whereon the customers and their IT-pros scarcely ever give a concern.

Argued about that now more services were going away to the outsourcing not only in IT. As even the smallest service or requires more time and continuous improvement, this requires a great deal of efforts and constant attention. That’s why even in IT and, in particular, in the clouds the model where various IT-services are gathered as a pool of services from different contractors is possible, when there is no reference to one contractor/supplier (to “hardware”). So far cloud technologies cannot get rid off fault perception by some potential customers as of something “greatly-elite”. However, gradually this aura is getting clear when even average enterprise is going into the cloud evolutionary gradually changing its entire  attitude (and approach, accordingly) to cloud solutions.

There was also an interesting case where UEFA was the customers. They are, obviously, interested: broadcasting and data security (in other words, 100% SLA). Within a year the integrator has been removed the servers – partially to physical ones, partially to virtual one – in different data centers backuping each other. There is an Organization center for football matches broadcasting (7 reserved lines by 7 communication providers!).

 

Interesting remark taken out of representatives’ speeches from various providers: customer system monitoring (allowing seeing what and how is used in their PDCs) is promoted by some as an additional service offered for charge and the other providers represent it together with their cloud.

Success Story from the client of SIM-NETWORKS: Andrei Semeniuk, IT-Director, D.S. Pharmacies network (Market Universal LTD Ukraine). Our customer shared the story about how he tried hosting with the domestic hosters, what problems he faced and about how his data base was “accidently” deleted by its transfer, and about how important the service vendor but not the PLACE and THAT SOMEBODY you lease the capacities. This case is an example that good marketing does not guarantee good services.

An interesting report was represented by the representative of Nokia, who told about Nokia solution for introduction of Software Defined Network. Often IT-infrastructure is singled out and represents a composition of technologies, clouds, hybrid clouds, various providers, conjunctions, network nodes. In this connection operatively and flexible such infrastructure shall be adjusted. The speaker represented Nokia solution installed as a program add-on for full monitoring of company’s IT-structure. This solution allows gathering together all parts of IT-enterprise, and allows its dynamic control; consequently, static structure of the enterprise becomes dynamic. For example, it’s useful in such situation when company division is in appropriate location, have a specific set of options (local providers, that equipment they have), – the above solution allows calculating and compare all possible options presuming from the fact of what is available, and the same way forecast what is may be required. In other words the functions of this application allows getting answers to the question which DPC should be selected, what shall be taken into account by infrastructure solutions integration so that it may be possible to move to the other contractor, how the communication channel should be laid down and so on. Especially topical are the issues by company expansion. According to the words of the speaker with the help of this solution the consumption of temporary and human resources by calculation and designing of all connected with a corporate IT-infrastructure significantly decreases. There is exceptionally program alternative for the solution, physical (1 box) and there is an opportunity to lease this equipment.

Interesting was the report about automatization in the cloud of the legal company. At the beginning the speaker told about the structure and business processes in the companies. Before him, as before one of the partners, stood the task to create remote office, decrease reaction time for legal requests, make backup of all documents. The very important point: when preparing a legal document a great pile of copies/versions thereof is collected, and sometimes it is too complicated to deal with that where the right version is (at the same time all copies and amendments shall be stored). Partially cloud, partially physical (VDS lease for documents backup) backuping in PDC was introduced resulting in disband of the usual address (additional charges decreased) – for the reason that the layers got free time (there was no need to sit for fixed hours in the office. At the same time the layers started answering at the dinnertime, at night, and what important, because this legal company works in all over CIS countries and the customers are in different time zones. Plus, arrangement of electronic and documentary communication inside company, what substantially improved team work and improved legal services provided.

One more case was represented to the audience from our customer – industrial company. Its goods are quite specific – sorting lines for industry, logistic companies, warehouses, etc. Company structure consists of manufacture, several divisions on site, and several sales departments in other countries. The staff does not exceed 200 employees. Corporate communications, as it often happens, are not duly well-adjusted: sales do not like marketing, marketing deals very obscure with manufacture processes, and engineers do not neither those nor others :) This case is a good example of that before introduction of a cool (including cloud) tools, it is necessary to, first, adequately design all processes, and secondly, accurately adjust document-flow and internal communication systems of the plant. The speaker (Executive Director – Viktoriia Vainike designed and introduced this solution, was the manager of this project) told about that you should be liberal at the stage of clearing up all wishes from different divisions and to be authoritarian – at the stage of introduction as none likes new even it’s very good and promise to make life easier. Business communication and strengthening of the team work in the company was the result of introduction of this project. Significantly changed for the better a decision-making system - due to introduction of e-communication system. In general communication level both external – with customers, and internal – in the team, has qualitatively increased. And what’s important, this all was implemented on free of charge cloud solutions in form of a test, passed evolutionary development  - adjustment, corrections making in a whole structure’s management. And only when the system settled down at the plant, it was decided to remove the entire structure to already paid cloud. Consequently, the entire “cloud” management project organically grew from the iterance to iterance as good software product. Other words, the power is not in tools and not in “cloud showing-offs” but in a correct approach to designing and automatization at the plant of any size.

Besides, there was very interesting stream at the forum dedicated to industrial systems automatization where CMD-engineers announced their requirements and standards to the representatives of IT-sphere. For example, the representative of “Krivorozhstal” told how they had automatized their industrial complex. Even earlier the production was enough complicated, and now it got even  more complicated and could not work according to old, Soviet GOSTs – now world standards for such size factory automatization are likely. And what is interesting, they faced that: а) no one from the integrators/programmers could offer them in sphere of automatization; b) moreover, no one of vendors either could offer the required solution. There exist a great number of automatization standards (ISA95, MIMOSA and others), and maximum is offered – complete solutions where “everything is own” and works according to those standards the vendor selected, but not those required by the steel-making plant. And so, engineers should collect not the solutions from different vendors but literally separate functions and finish them until they reach required automatization standards. The result of the report was that sales managers not always can deliver product advantages to the technicians: SCADA is in general production processes diagnostics, and when one more vendor’s representative comes and instead diagnostics show the visualization – without understanding that engineers don not need 100 types of diagrams but strict vision of all production “details” – such meeting, of course, cannot be effective for both of the parties. There is the other side of the coin: companies-developers of the solutions for industry start “reinventing the wheel” offering their visions and standards for the plant instead of that to focus on real needs of such customer.

 

Surely, large international IT-companies work for such customers (for Ford plant, for example), however, our domestic industrial plants work in an “old-fashioned way” and do not hurry drawing up their standards to greater automatization of the production processes and provide the same IT-sphere with the order to develop such systems.

Session conversation was carried out in the context of industrial digitalizing 4.0 – it’s a minimizing of human presence on site, communication of the machines between themselves. For example, there was a speaker who told about industrial compressor systems where the manufacturer reached the concept not equipment sale by itself, but an alternative where the customer is provided with the equipment (which costs a lot for such to be bought), and he pay only for actually used compressed air (as somebody said in the conference-hall, “Lucky you are, sale air!” :)) – in the extents even of an middle plant such approach is more than self-supporting. Also an example was given on unification of industrial compressor system in one cluster with the help of clout control, monitoring and statistics collection.

 

In general it should be noted that the conference turned out successful: there was a lot of useful information, there was no explicit “water”, all speakers were talking to the point. Cases on introduction of plant automatization systems for steel-making industry were usefully represented at the event.
