Price for Microsoft server software licenses to change starting 2021

New prices for Windows Server licenses 2021

New year - new prices

We got already accustomed to the fact that Microsoft annually adjusts the license lease prices for its products. Effective from 01/01/2021, the cost of MS server software licenses will grow again.

Since we work with Microsoft under the SPLA (Service Provider License Agreement), the prices for licenses for our customers will change too beginning from January 01, 2021. The growth in the cost of Microsoft licenses for service providers will be up to 10-12%. At the same time, we try to keep prices as close to the previous level as possible. For our customers, the cost of most Microsoft licenses will grow on average by only 1%, fluctuating in some cases within the range from 0.9 to 6.9%.

We would like to emphasize once again that SIM-Networks does not set its own prices for licenses of Microsoft products, this is solely the prerogative of the licensor.

What is SPLA

The Microsoft Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA) is for service providers and independent software vendors (ISVs) who want to license the latest eligible Microsoft software products to provide software services and hosted applications to end customers.

With the SPLA, service providers and ISVs can license eligible Microsoft products on a monthly basis, during a three-year agreement term, to host software services and applications for their customers.

The SPLA supports a variety of hosting scenarios to help these companies provide highly customized and robust solutions to a wide set of customers.

Licensing orders for Windows Server Standard is possible only for physical cores in the server (excluding the number of threads within Hyper-Threading).

The license for this product must include at least 8 cores (if the server has more than eight cores, the required number of packages is added to the minimum license, for two cores each). The cost of a package of licenses for Windows Server 2012/2016 Standard for each 2 cores from January 01, 2021, will be 5.03 EUR/month.

Calculation example: The E5-2630 V4 processor has 10 cores. For it, you need to purchase 5 license packages, for 2 cores each (5 * 5.03 = 25.15 EUR / month). If the server has two such processors, then there are 20 physical cores (10 packages are required for two cores each) and the amount doubles.

Windows Server Datacenter is licensed similarly. The cost of a license package for each 2 cores will be 34.88 EUR / month. The minimum license for 8 cores will cost 139.52 EUR / month. A very important point - this particular version of the software is designed to create a failover cluster (with dynamic redistribution of load between processor cores).

If you try to "save big" by choosing the Standard version, you will have to license all the cores of all servers in the cluster, where, in theory, this software can run during operation, even if this never happens. The real costs are not decreasing, but becoming noticeably larger. This is why Microsoft has a balanced offering in the form of a Datacenter version.
