Hybrid Cloud

Hybrid Cloud - Infrastructure as a Service

According to Forrester Research, the hybrid cloud infrastructure model combines cloud and on-premises IT resources. It can be a private cloud connected to a part of a public cloud, or a mix of some traditional local data center infrastructure with a public cloud, or corporate data and system apps shared between two private clouds. Anyway, some part of the hybrid cloud infrastructure is located at the provider’s facilities, and it allows to use of flexible resources within peak loads. At the same time apps with the permanent and stable workloads store in the private cloud, or on-premises.

Any hybrid cloud solution is a custom-tailored configuration for the customer’s needs meeting. Building a hybrid cloud the provider chooses the architecture of the solution, platforms, and virtualization systems to best meet customer’s expectations. Even if the hybrid cloud has the multiplatform infrastructure, for the greatest performance of the project, all infrastructure manages from the one point.

Hybrid cloud services: the essentials

The hybrid cloud service conception represents a technological symbiosis of two popular infrastructure approaches, aimed to create a reliable, high-available, and protected corporate system which can be scaled quickly and flexibly on demand.

Thus, a customer keeps in a private cloud (or on-premise) critical business data, and apps that run permanently without dependence on workloads. Those processes, apps, and data which need higher performance and scalability are moved to the provider’s public IaaS and use when a necessity.

Among hybrid cloud benefits can be emphasized the following:

  • Quick and easy scaling of computing capacities in peak workloads
  • The critical information is stored at the secured cloud store under the total control of a customer
  • Possibility to share data and apps between different infrastructure within the entire cloud environment
  • You can manage a testing environment, isolated from the main infrastructure, for your features

Conjunction at least two types of cloud services within the hybrid infrastructure allows companies to use new apps and features, or immediately balance workloads without the cloud architecture changing. A hybrid cloud allows the business to move data and software across both public and private cloud, and customize backup within a whole infrastructure.

Hybrid cloud is an enterprise-class solution

Hybrid cloud is a complex and expensive solution, which needs high cybersecurity standards, so it is mainly chosen by large enterprises.

Within the hybrid cloud model, the external resources provided by the provider can be used both during critical workloads, ensure high availability for services, and also as a stage for testing new apps or services to avoid interruption of current business processes.

A hybrid cloud concept allows to quickly increase computing capacities only for the required period, without overpaying for them when the necessity has finished. For example, this is suitable for companies with a seasonal business, who use their on-premises infrastructure most of the time and rent a public cloud provider’s computing capacities for the additional infrastructure deployment during peak periods. To store sensitive data and run simple, but important apps, the customer uses a private cloud, which is totally managed by the customer.

A hybrid cloud is efficient also in the case when a company has its own private cloud infrastructure that was deployed on-premises relatively recently, up to one and a half years but wants to optimize the corporate expenditures of IT infrastructure by moving them from Capex to Opex. There are two ways to solve this issue:

  • the first way is to sell the company's own servers, and totally migrate the corporate infrastructure to public or private cloud rented from an external provider. This way is not reasonable, because the search for buyers can be delayed, and the equipment loses its value over time, and as a result, the company loses significant funds;
  • the second way is to create a hybrid cloud – move all new or growing services to the public cloud of the provider and continue to use a private cloud, and as the private infrastructure becomes obsolete, more and more resources will migrate to the public cloud. Sure, this way gives much more flexibility and profitability.

Do not forget about security in hybrid cloud infrastructure. Despite meaning that cloud-based informational security measures are guaranteed by a cloud provider in hybrid clouds, it is important to care about corporate cybersecurity as a whole across the infrastructure.
