Diskless office or a medium-sized company

This case study describes the implementation of a cloud project implemented for one of the clients of our partner company, system integrator ITSG.

The main client’s requirement was to store all the information in the cloud of IT services provider; employees should work remotely, on the terminal server, via RDP.

Customer requirements specification:

  • to build an IT infrastructure with a minimum budget for the company with 40 employees;
  • to design low-cost and compact employee workstations;
  • to provide employees with access to the network using mobile devices.

Project requirements:

  • The most important thing for the client is to organize work using the terminal connection to the cloud so all the information should be stored out of the office.
  • User applications should run on the server in the data center of the IT provider. There shouldn’t be any storage media (disks and other drives), that contains work documents and archives in the company’s office.
  • Employees' computers must operate using remote access to the terminal server.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

The local network of the company is designed considering the bandwidth requirements and limited project budget:

  1. Passive network hardware:
    • 100 Mbit/s Structured Cabling System;
    • 6U server cabinet;
    • 48 ports patch panel (one link per user);
    • single module sockets and patch cords for each user (total cable length 960 m).
  2. Active network hardware:
    • one unmanaged 48 ports switch;
    • router MikroTik RB2011UIAS-RM;
    • wireless Wi-Fi access point for personal users’ devices MikroTik cAP (RBcAP2nD).

Employee workplaces are equipped with microcomputers - diskless thin clients, standard peripherals and 19’’ monitors:

  • a thin client (single board microcomputer Raspberry Pi 3B in a compact plastic case Raspberry Pi 3B+/3B/2B);
  • HDMI signal cable;
  • 2Gb micro USB memory card;
  • HDMI/D-SUB adapter;
  • hardware peripheral: wireless keyboard/mouse kit;
  • monitors: the budget option Philips 193V5LSB2/10.

Server:

  • rent of the server with required capacity in the resource pool.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

As a result, the entire office infrastructure for 40 company employees was created and put into operation in 5 working days.

The efficient company infrastructure is built with minimum expenses: the implementation of diskless thin allows the company to reduce the workplaces equipment costs three times, compared to the cost of an ordinary office computer.

The thin client does not contain any moving and wear parts, as disks, ventilation systems, power supplies, so employees' personal computers shouldn’t be updated every 3-5 years. Thus, the client significantly saves in workplaces maintenance.

The terminal cloud server provides employees with a familiar working environment. Access to the server from any place in the world makes it possible to work remotely.

Thanks to the implementation of a terminal connection system, the need to purchase licenses for office software and operating systems (MS Windows) was no longer necessary.

The configuration described in this case will be interesting for small companies with a limited budget.
