Images update for OPNsense and MikroTik RouterOS in SIM-Cloud

SIM-Cloud - MikroTik RouterOS 6.40.4 and OPNsense

We are constantly working to improve our product and to enhance the quality of the service. The infrastructure is monitored 24/7, and we ensure that the software being used is up-to-date.

The SIM-Cloud IaaS evolves dynamically, and we work actively on the SIM-Cloud 3.0 release. However, we still keep an eye on the updates and maintain our services up-to-date. After all, our vision of being a customer-centric company means that we need to meet all technical needs of our customers as much as possible by facilitating the most cutting-edge IT solutions.

In particular, we would like to note that we have updated the images of the OPNsense and MikroTik RouterOS operating systems available to be installed in the cloud up to the latest stable versions. As always, you can access the OS images directly via the SIM-Cloud Dashboard.

In terms of the latest version of OPNsense (v.17), we would like to note the following enhancements:

  • FreeBSD system components have been upgraded to version 11;
  • HardenedBSD project patches have been integrated to cater for a higher protection level (ASLR, PIE, SEGVGUARD);
  • Improved mechanism of secure update installation;
  • OPNsense web interface has been improved;
  • new FTP Proxy, Tinc VPN and Let's Encrypt plugins have been added;
  • IPsec tunnel isolation mode has been introduced;
  • PHP 7.0 is now supported;
  • PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) can now be used for two-factor authentication (2FA over SSH);
  • Tools for full logging of all changes have been introduced;
  • It is now possible to audit the installed software to verify if it has any known vulnerabilities;
  • Mesh routing for VPN is now supported;
  • Remote installation via SSH has been enabled. When the installation image is uploaded, the IP 192.168.1.1 is assigned to the system and a DHCP server is launched, which lets you perform the installation from the client system connected to the same local network if you connect using SSH with ‘installer’ as login and ‘opnsense’ as password.

The MikroTik RouterOS image in version 6.40.4 has also received a number of important updates, including those related to security and compatibility. The full list of changes is available on the official websites mikrotik.com and opnsense.org
